"INK" - Screening Sunday, August 2nd!

"ink" - a Jamin Winans film

The Annapolis Pretentious Film Society is proud to offer a sneak preview of its screening series with the most talked about independent sci-fi film on the Internet. We are starting our screenings earlier than planned to coincide with the Annapolis First Sunday Arts Festival on August 2, 2009, sponsored in part by our venue, The Whiskey, which also is sponsoring a stage at the fest. All information is below.

The arts festival is co-sponsored by the Annapolis Arts Alliance and West Street Business Association.

"ink," a yet-to-be-distributed film which has been flying below the radar of most festivals, is one of the most amazing pieces of independent science fiction/fantasy filmmaking I have ever seen. In fact, I personally believe that "ink" will break through and become at first a cult hit and then a mainstream sensation -- much like "The Blair Witch Project."

But the comparison with "Blair Witch" ends there.

In "ink," filmmaker Jamin Winans of Denver creates and delivers a an epic story in a world that far exceeds the imagination, and the film has a stunning big budget look that leaves many Hollywood features in the dust.

The August 2 screening is the Annapolis Pretentious Film Society's "maiden voyage," and I can't think of a better film to kickoff the series because it embodies the true independent spirit that we want to bring to our audience. As many of you know I am a filmmaker myself and I feel very strongly that this movie should be seen. In the future when everyone is talking about "ink," our audience will be able to say, "I saw it before anyone gave it a chance, and I helped get it where it is today."

And that would be true.

This is what the Annapolis Pretentious Film Society is all about. Finding these secret gems and passing them along to film lovers who want to experience something entertaining and special.

"Film geeks, there is a new 'it' movie – INK. It is not easy to fully convey the experience of this film in words, because it is so visual, has such a complicated narrative, and looks and feels so different than anything else I've seen. You can watch the trailer, but even that doesn't do it justice. When I'm searching for films to compare it to, I think of things like the Matrix, Dark City, Donnie Darko, and Brazil. All of those films share a common thread – they are hypercreative explorations of a stylized reality wholly formed out of a fertile imagination."

Doors Open upstairs at The Whiskey at 3pm, Sunday, August 2nd
The Program begins at 4pm there will be a trailer of a coming attraction and a short before the feature. The program will end before by 7pm.

"ink" is not suitable for children due to the intense subject matter and some use of "profanity." Parents should seriously consider not bringing any child under the age of 16.

The Annapolis Pretentious Film Society

Welcome!

Hello...

Welcome to the Annapolis Pretentious Film Society --a group dedicated to the exhibition of independent film.

I know, I know...

Why on earth am I starting this furshlugginer Annapolis Pretentious Film Society while independent film is in a downward spiral?

Well, the first reason is that it is very important that film fanatics and movie nuts of every stripe know how to spell "Pretentious." According to a conversation I overheard on a bus, it is the 178th most misspelled word on Twitter and it is an essential word in the cinematic vocabulary --especially when discussing Mumblecore, The New Vague, or the works of Samuel Weil.

Second, independent film is hurting. I could get really political here and talk about the closing of so many independent distributors and the way festivals appear to be taking less chances and programming more established filmmakers and conservative fare -- but the bottom line is this: There is a tremendous amount of interesting and entertaining independent cinema that is being turned away at every venue and is nowhere on the radar for those who love film.

Now, granted, there are a lot of pedestrian films out there too. But I truly believe that the cream will always rise to the top and I am going to do my best to program the "best of the ignored," because every interesting independent movie has its audience.

And I want to help them find it.

You can help them too. As this project begins, the APFS will do it's best, as scheduling permits, to screen independent films one Sunday a month upstairs at The Whiskey at 1803 West Street in Annapolis. The doors will open at 3:00 PM and the program will begin at 4. There will be a trailer or two, an independent short film and a feature film. There will be narrative films of many genres, as well as documentaries. The plan is to be over and done with the program by 7 p.m. so everybody can get some sleep for the Monday grind. (And be home in time to watch "True Blood.")

Admission is a wallet friendly $5 per person, including children over 10. (Each movie will have information about adult content and suggest age limits)

There will be a cash bar and a full menu available to allow you a fun and relaxing time as you sit back and enjoy a unique new cinematic experience exploring the new breed of independent filmmakers.

We will also encourage your participation in supporting independent film by providing contact and IMDB information so that you can rate and review the new undiscovered movies you will see, and even comment right here at the APFS blog. But that's only if you want to.

This is not about replacing the Summer blockbusters, or trying to shove some kind of "challenging art" down your throat. I love going to the cineplex movies too! And it's not about challenging the studios. It's about having some fun -- checking out something new and offbeat in a small intimate setting, and then sitting around and riffing on it.

Heck, there might even be some musicians involved.

And are we really pretentious? Come on out and we'll discuss it over a beer and a plate of wings.

The movie schedule will be listed below. I hope to see you soon! Please follow us here on the blog, on Twitter, MySpace and Facebook. We are going to have a lot of fun on a low-budget, just like indie filmmakers - heh.
