HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

Oh, my.

There couldn't be a better day on the calendar to promote, what I think, is the most remarkable film in our showcase.  "Silver Tongues" is not only about love, trust, and, well, companionship -- it is a truly compelling example of fiercely independent cinema at its finest.

Starring Lee Tergesen (Oz, Red Tails) and Enid Graham (Blue Valentine, Boardwalk Empire), it's a story about lovers traveling from town to town on an insidous tour of performance art which is played out in the personal lives of everyone they meet.

The Director, Simon Arthur, weaves a narrative that pulls you in so quickly and with such raw emotion that by the end of this of this brilliant film you will be consumed with joy. Every cineaste searches for the pearls of independent greatness at odd little screenings like ours and I am confident that if you choose to open this mysterious oyster, you will find this showcase's indie pearl... on a Silver Tongue.





I hope you come to see "Silver Tongues."  I have a feeling everyone will be talking about this gem soon.

Showcase Spotlight: "A Second Knock at the Door," with Q & A, Screening Saturday, 2/18

PLEASE NOTE:
There will be a Q and A session immediately following this screening with Chris Sharrett, of Forest, Virginia, whose brother, Pfc David Sharrett was killed by friendly fire in 2008 and whose story is one of three told in this documentary. 

He will be joined be joined by James Gordon Meek, an award-winning investigative reporter in Washington, D.C. who first broke the story of a cover-up in the Sharrett case in an article in the New York Daily News. 


When I saw A SECOND KNOCK AT THE DOOR, at last year's Flyway Film Festival, I was completely knocked off my feet.  This is a powerful documentary which focuses on the issue of American troop fatalities caused by "friendly fire," which is the inadvertent firing on one's own soldiers while engaging with an enemy.

This was brought into high relief in Afghanistan in 2004, when former NFL star Pat Tillman was killed by friendly fire in a firefight near the Pakistan border.  The incident was initially covered up and Tillman was awarded the Silver Star posthumously as it was publicly reported that Tillman died battling troops "in the line of devastating enemy fire." 

But later, after a more thorough investigation, the Pentagon ruled the incident that caused Tillman's death was friendly fire.  This incident continues to be controversial to this day, and A SECOND KNOCK AT THE DOOR looks at three (out of many) cases of families who were first informed that their loved ones perished in the line of duty, only to be later contacted that their family member was actually killed by another soldier. 

It is at this point that a dance between the Pentagon and the families begin.  Details become hazy and information confused -- phone calls stop being returned.

In 2010, Director Christopher Grimes, traveled across the country meeting with more than 20 families of soldiers whose loved ones were killed by friendly fire in Afghanistan and Iraq.  In A SECOND KNOCK AT THE DOOR,  Grimes tells us the story of three of those families who sought the truth about their family member's death.

I am not sure when I heard this, it was either during his Q and A at Flyway or later as I got know him, but Christopher Grimes told me that he heard many times from festivals and venues that documentaries dealing with Iraq and Afghanistan were "so done, so over."

I don't share that sentiment.

A SECOND KNOCK AT THE DOOR is an important and honest documentary that examines an issue in our military that refuses to go away.

A Second Knock at the Door offers a rare glimpse into the lives of military families dealing with the loss of loved ones to friendly fire. Through interviews and investigative reports obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, this documentary explores several key incidents in which the families of the fallen were forced to embark on a quest for the truth after the Army attempted to bury the true cause of death within the "fog of war."
